Seminar; Evidence of a New Renaissance
Peter Donaldson leads a lively seminar comparing what we know about the Italian Renaissance with the patterns impacting life today. What conditions catalyzed the Renaissance 500 years ago?  Are there parallels to our own time? Are we moderns at the cusp of a New Renaissance? To explore these and other inquiries, students are provided a list of “20 Questions for a New Renaissance” in advance of the seminar. The questions serve as a guide for the seminar. There are no right answers. The only test is the depth and breadth of our collective vision for humanity’s future and our own particular genius in contributing to it. All participants are encouraged to attend The Life and Times of Leonardo da Vinci playing at Harlequin Productions, January 18 through February 10, and to attend the Televised New Renaissance Community Forum, February 11 at 2:00.

Harlequin Productions, Sightline Institute, and local partners will convene a New Renaissance Community Forum on the Leonardo set featuring a panel of five local thought leaders engaged in dialogue on our central inquiry, Renaissance Then – Renaissance Now? Our panel will be selected for their interdisciplinary interests in economics, ecology, technology, science, religion, sociology, philosophy, politics, history and art. Panelists will be both content experts and expert storytellers, adept at illustrating global patterns with local examples. TheCommunity Forum will be facilitated by Leonardo himself with lively interplay between the panel and audience.

The New Renaissance Community Forum will be broadcast by Thurston Community TV with multiple showings throughout the local service area reaching an estimated 8,000 viewers. Additionally, footage from the Community Forum, the Leonardo production, and extended interviews with local thought leaders will be reformatted as an educational DVD to be distributed to humanities instructors in the local school districts, and at Evergreen State College, South Puget Sound Community College, Olympic College, and St. Martin’s University.
